A word from Mr. Brady

Second grade is a wonderful time in a child's life. This is the time when a child begins to use skills to learn rather than learn to use skills.

In my classroom children enjoy solving problems and puzzles in math, develop thinking skills and reasoning abilities through reading, and explore scientific thinking as they develop an understanding of the experimental method.

We also, each year, host the one and only Hillcrest Elementary Chess Club. After I instruct my class in the basics of the game we invite the school in to our room to play chess during the Friday lunch periods. Parents are welcome to join us.

The arts are not ignored. We learn folk songs from around the world and to play musical instruments, and so several times a year we perform for our fellow students and parents at special events. Last, graphic arts are made integral to science, reading, math and social studies.

Part of Social Studies is spent at the start of the year creating our own set of expectations, or rules. I also teach students to solve problems that they might have with each other in a forum we call our Class Court. Also an important part of daily lessons allows the students to cooperate with each other as they work so as to promote the development of our classroom into a community of learners.

We teach each other, help each other, and try to do our best. We also have a system by which we earn parties. During the year we recycle aluminum cans so that when we do have our parties some of our treats are bought with money we have earned.

I contact parents throughout the year; we have parties, field trips, and sometimes our parent visitors just stop by and join us.

Welcome
