Alvarado School attracts more and more neighborhood students with its
top-quality, child-centered program in two strands. Parents may select
Alvarado’s English-language strand or its English-Spanish *Two-Way Immersion
Program, which develops fluency in both languages for *English Language
Learners and English-proficient students.
Both programs are committed to a rigorous, integrated, thematic
curriculum fostering deep learning through hands-on experiences. Alvarado
emphasizes quality literature, apprenticeships in the arts and investigative
science projects. In addition to
effective, experience-based classroom instruction, all the disciplines are
supported through computer technology. Alvarado is proud to have received the
California Association of Bilingual Educators’ Seal of Excellence Award in
Spring 2000—one of only six schools named in California. K-2 students in the English-only strand now
study Spanish as a second language, with plans in the works to expand the
classes through fifth grade. The commitment, dedication and hard work of the
school community, as well as a longstanding relationship with artists in
residence, resulted in the installation of an ingenious ceramic studio in an

community created the magnificent ceramic mural that now dazzles visitors at

Argonne Year-Round Elementary School provides
instruction within a warm and supportive atmosphere. Children benefit from a program that applies Howard Gardner’s
multiple intelligence theory into their daily learning experiences. Argonne’s teaching staff recognizes the
importance of connecting content learned in school with the real world. This is done through
thematic/interdisciplinary studies and a wide variety of field trips. Argonne has an extended school year
beginning in July and ending in June.
This allows students to take part in more enrichment activities and
spend less time in relearning forgotten content. Family involvement is crucial in providing and directing our
educational program through volunteering in classroom, helping with special
projects, governance, and other school activities. Parents serve as leaders on all school committees.

the key factor in placing them as one of the “jewels” in the California school

goals and needs; and reflective and collaborative planning within staff and
among resources who work with our children.
Clarendon has two distinctive programs available to
students. Our Japanese Bilingual
Bicultural Program (JBBP) offers Japanese language and cultural instruction for
both Japanese and native English speakers and actively promotes parent
participation. Our Second Community

A
member of the Bay Area School Reform Collaborative, Glen Park's theme
"Language Arts Through The Arts," promotes classroom themes featuring
People, Imagination, and Environment (P.I.E.). The enriched students’ work
resulting from this emphasis captures student and adult attention as they view
the creative and educational hallway and classroom bulletin board displays.
Upon
entering Glen Park School one might view supervised students participating in
one of their service learning projects, which involves maintaining the trees,
and large plants that surround the exterior of the school. In a classroom, the visitor might view a
science or math lesson where the teacher is instructing using manipulative or
multimedia equipment, which provide students with an enhanced and expanded
understanding of key concepts. In
another room, students may be preparing a recently read literature piece for
dramatization or for the next Read Aloud Day or they might be focusing on
writing a summary or a compare/contrast response of several readings. The talented teaching staff at Glen Park is
continually examining their practice, reviewing student work and employing the
best-researched methods proven to be most effective. They hold a strong belief that all individuals are teachers and
all individuals are learners.
Of
great pride to the entire Glen Park learning community is their “Weekly Cluster
Program” during which teachers meet to confer on research, curriculum and
effective strategies, while students select and participate in a variety of
adult guided inter-group, cross-age, and multi-ethnic experiences such as integrated
language arts enrichment activities, more opportunities to use computer
technology, access to the Library/Media Center, working with artists in
residence to prepare performances and engaging in Multi-Cultural study groups.
Of
equal pride to the Glen Park community is the Parent Welcome Center located in
the main hallway. Parent involvement is
increased by providing a greeting place, and a media set-up with TV, VCR and
computer which offers an opportunity for parents to review school activities,
parenting materials and an access to technology.
Come
and participate in the exciting energy that is consistently present at Glen

San Francisco Community Alternative School is a
kindergarten through eighth grade school which strives to create a learning
environment where all students can develop the skills and tools they need to
become effective decision-makers and productive citizens in today’s world. Since our beginning in 1972, we have sought
to establish a learning environment where students, parents, teachers and the
community at large work together. The
warm and supportive atmosphere helps to draw parents into the school and to
construct a strong support system for the personal growth of each student. The staff and community work together to
learn about and practice active antiracist, culturally conscious and inclusive
ways of being to create a school culture that supports all students to meet our
high standards and goals of excellence.
In our effort to provide all students with a
meaningful and relevant education, the program at San Francisco Community
School focuses on developing and implementing an interdisciplinary
challenge-based approach to learning.
Students spend half the year (two nine week projects) in their project
classes. We believe these strategies
help raise overall student achievement while also addressing and redressing
inequities in achievement, performance and school experience.

thinking/problem solving skills, and personal responsibility. Children are involved in appropriate
decision making and “help run the school” by taking on some “jobs” so that
teachers spend more time teaching. We
fully expect that our students will be prepared to be the Mayor of San
Francisco, a rocket scientist or any other profession to which they aspire and
will work towards. The challenging
curriculum focused around science keeps learning at the cutting edge and gives
our students an advantage as they prepare for the unknown future. A solid foundation of all educational
subject matter, especially the language arts, communications and math, are
offered. Creativity is fostered by a
rich arts program: dance (S.F. Ballet), music/choir, quilting, fiber arts, ceramics, murals,
drama and more through artists-in-residence and talented teachers. Computer/media technology in a wide range of
high tech tools is used to implement learning and express creativity. Other programs include: *English Plus Chinese or Spanish, GATE,
Conflict Resolution, motor skills, and many special projects.
Accelerated
Learning is crucial and children are taught learning-to-learn strategies while
homework is offered all year long (week-ends, vacations, summer) to extend
lifelong learning. School is the “home
for the mind” where all of us are expected to use our brains to learn
continuously and live harmoniously.
Fifth graders spend one week at an environmental camp. Field studies are conducted at Bay Area
sites and museums. Parents and families
go on trips to the Lawrence Hall of Science & our U.C. Berkeley, for
example. Parent involvement is
valued. Resourceful staff members are
leaders in science, language arts, other aspects of education, and have
received awards for outstanding service.
Spring Valley received awards from California as a Distinguished School
and from the U.S. Office of Education for Excellence in Education.

coaching toward the goal. Malcolm X is proud to have been recognized as a
California Distinguished School. The
effort of 20 dedicated volunteer tutors from C.M.P. Publishing enhances the paraprofessional instructional support

particularly proud of its enrichment programs in science, visual and performing
arts, and environmental education. In
addition to studying the nearby bayshore, students participate in oceanic
environmental studies at Fort Funston. Perhaps the most memorable learning experience for fifth grade

comprehensive curriculum emphasizing science and English language arts. For three years starting in 2002, all
teachers are committed to a three year professional development project
sponsored by SFUSD and the GALEF Institute.

Schulewerk, dance and movement, singing, instrumental music and poetry.
Each

Alice Fong Yu Alternative School, the nation’s
first Chinese Immersion school, provides an outstanding educational experience
for children of all backgrounds. Through integrated study and a hands-on,
minds-on approach to instruction, English-proficient students experience a rich
and challenging program. They develop competency in the Cantonese language and
use the two languages to actively and successfully access the curriculum. Alice
Fong Yu students are fully conversant and literate in both English and
Cantonese by 5th grade. The staff,
students and parents of Alice Fong Yu School work collaboratively towards the
school’s mission: “To prepare students to become caring, responsible and
competent citizens with global perspectives and credible skills in the Chinese
language, who can face the challenges of the 21st century”. A Mandarin-language component is added for
upper-grade students. Grants and
resources raised by an active parent association support a variety of
enrichment programs, such as Performing Arts Workshop, Poets in the Schools and
science and library consultants.
Parents consistently help in the classroom, accompany classes on field
trips and serve on various parent organizations.
COMER PROJECT: A school development program, founded by child
psychiatrist James P. Comer of Yale University, that has demonstrated
significant impact on student success for 15 years. The underlying philosophy proposes unconditional positive regard
for every person in the school, the support of parents as partners in their
child’s education, and the establishment of a collaboration of stakeholders….parents,
teachers and administrators… seeking consensus decision making regarding all
phases of a school’s plan. A most important feature of this team’s work is to
identify those elements necessary to create a most rigorous and creative
curriculum and to identify students who are demonstrating need and require
supportive interventions or who are excelling and need even more challenging
interventions.
CHILD DEVELOPMENT
PROGRAM: The Child Development Program, established in
1943, is the largest provider of early child care and educational services for
young children in the City and County of San Francisco. Serving approximately 4,500 children in the
infant/toddler, pre-kindergarten, and school-age programs, we provide early
childhood education programs, and quality, developmentally appropriate
activities for students in before and after school care programs. These programs are provided in a safe,
caring, nurturing environment that promotes each child’s social, emotional,
physical and cognitive growth and competency.
As part of this experience, children are guaranteed a validation of
their cultural and linguistic heritage.
Sites are operated throughout the city.
Programs are based on a sliding–fee scale determined by the California
Department of Education, Child Development Division. Most centers are open five days a week from 7:00 a.m. to 6:00
p.m. throughout the year. Each of the
sites is licensed by the Community Care Licensing Division of the California
State Department of Human Services. For
information about the enrollment, please call Child Development Program at
750-8500 or visit them at 20 Cook Street, San Francisco, CA 94118.
DIFFERENT WAYS OF
KNOWING: Founded by Los Angeles philanthropists Andrew
and Bronya Galef, the Galef Institute, their non-profit educational
organization, has pursued comprehensive school reform through The Different
Ways of Knowing (DWoK) Project. DWoK is
a research-based initiative that attempts to engage and strengthen the
linguistic, mathematical, artistic, and intuitive abilities of students in
grades K-7. Specifically, it regards
students as creative, capable learners and builds on their strengths; provides
a framework for hands-on, student-center learning that guides classroom
teaching as well as continuous professional development in best practices; uses
compelling themes to develop the *multiple intelligences of children; provides
the best in children’s literature, reference materials, study prints, transparencies,
audio & videotapes, and software from various publishers; adapts
instruction to include various symbol systems…not only language and numbers,
but also the visual, performing , and media arts as learning tools; provides
skill-building lessons in the context of inquire–based learning; builds a
classroom community, encourages shared responsibility for classroom management
and learning, and promotes an understanding of democratic ideals; offers
guidelines and resources to assess students’ learning; invites active,
collaborative reflection by both teachers and students; and provides a common
language for educators to use in creating an educational partnership among
parents, school, district and community.
As noted above, this project is highly compatible
with the research on Howard Gardner’s theory of *Multiple Intelligences.
ENGLISH LANGUAGE LEARNER: A child/youth who is fluent in a language other than
English and is entering the public school system is described as an English
Language Learner. This status is
determined by a standardized assessment that yields a reliable placement
score. Children/youths enrolled in a
public school with a minimum understanding of English are designated to receive
supportive funds from state and federal sources to develop their English
fluency.
Dual Language Enrichment provides English
Language Learners with instruction in English and their primary
language. San Francisco Unified School
District offers this program in:
English Plus Cantonese,
English Plus Filipino and English Plus Spanish. The primary language is used to assure access to the core
curriculum. The amount of time spent in
the primary language is reduced as the student’s proficiency in English
increases.
Two Way Immersion provides English
proficient students and English Language Learners with an
opportunity to develop competency in both English and another language and to
use the two languages to access the core curriculum. The goal of this program
option is to develop proficiency in, and to learn through, two languages. This bilingual maintenance model is
available in English plus Cantonese, English plus Korean, and English plus
Spanish.
Total Immersion provides English
proficient students with the opportunity to develop competency in the
chosen language while continuing to build competency in English. Currently, this maintenance bilingual model
is only available in English plus Cantonese in grades K-5 at Alice Fong Yu
School. Mandarin, as a World Language,
is added at the 6th grade and continues through the 8th
grade.
In addition to the English Plus Programs listed
above, an Intensive English Program can be selected by parents of English
Language Learners at many San Francisco Schools. This program provides the child with the opportunity
to acquire English and to access the core curriculum through specific
instruction in English language development using Specially Designed
Academic Instruction in English strategies (SDAIE).
All teachers serving English Language Learners in any
of the above programs are required to have additional training and
certification to meet the needs of their students.

I.R.I.S.E. (Infusing Responsibilities for Intellectual and
Scholastic Excellence): This highly successful
program is predicated on “effective schools” research and other contemporary
“best practice” research aimed at effecting positive change in the program of
instruction for African American and children of different cultural
backgrounds. Serving approximately 192
classrooms district-wide, I.R.I.S.E. is dedicated to building, through
professional development, a community of educators with commitment and capacity
for effecting improved student achievement, assuring quality in language and
mathematics literacy development and addressing issues in classroom management
and family/school relations. To
accomplish this, 3 “Key Strategies” are employed: providing relevant and rigorous curriculum; establishing an
engaging learning environment; and achieving high quality teacher/student
relationships. These strategies,
enhanced by high teacher expectations for student achievement, have evidenced
measurable gains in reading and mathematics across its entire 2nd-8th
grade spectrum, for each of the four years that I.R.I.S.E. has been in
existence.
MULTIPLE INTELLIGENCE
THEORY: Challenging the traditional psychological
view of intelligence as a single capacity that drives logical and mathematical
thought, Dr. Howard Gardner, of Harvard University, has proposed that all
individuals possess seven independent intelligences. It is these, in
combination, that enable people to solve problems or fashion new products. The “intelligences” are: linguistic and
logical-mathematical (the styles of thinking measured most often on
psychological tests), musical, spatial, bodily-kinesthetic (including large and
small motor skills), interpersonal ( successfully engaging others) and
intrapersonal (self-knowledge).
There is a vast body of information on Gardner’s
work and the schools and school districts across the nation that are designing
instruction to better fit the gifts and talents (“intelligences”) of all their
students. For more information check www.norfolk.k12.ma.us
PERCEPTUAL MOTOR PROGRAMS offer children a variety of
activities that provide training and practice in integrating hand/eye/body
coordination. These activities involve
developing ease in balance and moving effectively through space, catching,
skipping, hopping and running with a organized purpose and attaining mastery
over situations with ever increasing complexities are all integral features of
a perceptual motor program. A
significant body of research supports the relationship between developing these
perceptual motor abilities and their effect on the act of reading and
organizing the placement of print on paper.
READING RECOVERY: Developed by New Zealand educator and psychologist
Marie M. Clay and brought to the U.S. via Ohio State University in 1984,
Reading Recovery is an intensive early intervention literacy program provided
to first-grade children who are demonstrating reading difficulty (lowest 20% of
the class). Eligibility is determined by
the assessment and judgment of the child’s classroom teacher. Regular classroom instruction is
supplemented with daily one-to-one, 30 minute lessons for 12-20 weeks with a
specially trained teacher. Specially
designed lessons provide children with individualized instruction that focus on
their strengths, experience with books and stories, accelerated learning
expectations, and strategies that help them become independent learners.
Steps in the Special Education Process are: 1) Identification, 2) Request for an
Evaluation, 3) Evaluation,
4) Eligibility for Special Education, 5)
Individualized Educational Program (IEP), and 6) Re-evaluations. Each student’s IEP determines the level/type
of support needed including support that may be necessary for school personnel.

In addition to a full-time facilitator and an
advisory committee, it is agreed that the component considered essential to
student success and the success of the program is the Family Support Team. This
team is created to facilitate the inclusion of the parent in the total
process. Its role is to consistently
encourage parents to read to their children daily, to be proactive in involving
parents in school activities, and to intervene when problems at home interfere
with a child’s progress at school.
