Welcome to Horace Mann Middle School located in the
Mission District! Our students are
placed into six “families” of approximately 100 students each, taught by a team
of four core teachers. In addition to
maintaining the positive gains that we have made so far, our new configuration
encourages the academic and social growth of each student. Academically, the teacher teams strengthen
the student’s ability to learn by thematically connecting the core
subjects: Language Arts, Social
Studies, Science and Mathematics. As
part of our whole-student approach, we believe middle school students need
guidance and nurturing as they make important decisions and transitions that
will affect their success in high school and beyond. Family groupings give added opportunity for positive
teacher/student relationships. We actively work with our students to build
self-confidence, mutual respect, leadership and community involvement. These include student government,
cooperative learning techniques, and school-wide projects like Awareness Month
and “Learning Challenges.” This year
Horace Mann has extended its’ instructional day and have added a reading class
for all students. We feel that if we
can provide additional literacy support to our students, we will then be able
to have them understand the content in their other subjects better.
In addition to the strong academic emphasis at
Horace Mann, our school provides a rich and wonderful after school program that
focuses on the student’s academic as well as social development. We have formed strong relationships with
neighborhood Community Based Organizations to support student growth. Such programs include the Y.M.C.A.,
Y.W.C.A., Jamestown Learning Center, Instituto, Horizons, Mexican Museum and
many more. Students receive academic
tutoring as well as the opportunity to participate in art, drama, sports and
music programs.
