Do I really need to include a general education teacher in an IEP for my SDC student who is hardly mainstreamed at all?
Yes.

Who is responsible for ensuring general education participation in IEPs?
Principal or Site Manager.

How does the Parents' Concerns section differ from a dissenting statement?
The Parents' Concerns section is an opportunity for parents to share their concerns, expectations, and/or aspirations for their child's education. A dissenting statement is appropriate when a parent disagrees with the plan developed by the IEP team.

If my school already sends home periodic progress reports to all families of special education students, must I send home the goal sheets as well?
No. Special education students are to receive the same periodic progress reports as their nondisabled peers. The goal sheet was prepared for double duty as a progress report form for those sites where no other reporting goes on, and/or to specifically address the progress of IEP goals and objectives.

What is the procedure for requesting an additional classroom paraprofessional?
Complete packet entitled Additional Classroom Support Aide, which is basically an analysis of teacher's and students' schedules throughout the school day. Your Program Consultant can assist you with this process.

Why are the Special Day Classes at the sites listed as K-5 when they are typically K-2 and 3-5?
The sites are responsible for the grade spans of the classes, which vary across the District.

In light of the new state law regarding bilingual instruction, are we nonetheless required to check ELL box and write a linguistic goal for English language learner special education students?
Yes. However, only the Bilingual Education & Language Academy can determine LEP status.

What are "alternative assessments"?
Curriculum-based assessments, language samples, portfolios, teacher-prepared instruments, etc. (See chapter four of the District's Content and Performance Standards.

What is "low incidence" eligibility?
Students are eligible for specialized equipment and/or services under Low Incidence Funding if and only if their eligibility is blind, deaf, deaf/blind, orthopedically impaired, or a combination thereof.

Where is the need for a sign language interpreter addressed?
This is to be addressed in the Communication section. It can also be a Special Alert.

Are triennial evaluations still required?
Yes; however, with parent's informed consent within the IEP process and on an individual basis, additional testing may not be required.

Is parents' permission required to do any formal educational testing at any time?
Yes.

Is there a brief summary or "cheat sheet" for teachers to use to help with new IEP?

Do we list test scores from educational instruments under Summary of Assessments?
Yes.

How do 504 plans and behavior contracts coexist?
A student with a 504 plan may have a behavior contract as may a student with an IEP. The latter student, however, has been determined eligible for special education services with a disabling condition meeting special education eligibility criteria.

Are we to ask for MediCal documentation of any kind?
No.

May parents bring other people to an IEP meeting without notifying the teacher?
Yes, with the exception of legal representation, for which the District expects prior written notification.

How do we complete section on Access To Supplementary Aids and Services?
This refers to equipment currently available to the student (not a wish list).

Can a member of an IEP team dissent?
The dissent is a due process right of parents/guardians.

Is an additional Differential Standards form required [other than Section XVI]?
No.

How often is the Certification of a Learning Disability to be completed?
At initial IEPs and at IEPs resulting from triennial evaluations.

Is input required from every general education teacher who works with a student?
No.

What is Modified Physical Education?
It is Physical Education offered to the students by the Special Day Class Teacher, separate from the mainstream PE classes.

Where do you put information such as needs to be fed, needs help with toileting, takes medication etc.?
Special Alert section.

Where does health and independent living information go?
Under Areas of Strength and Areas of Need.

Where do DIS reports go?
In the Assessment section of the student's Pupil Personnel Service (brown) folder.

Does IDEA affect DIS services to students with 504 plans?
No. 504 regulations have not changed.

What part(s) of the IEP can be shared with general education teachers?
Goals and Objectives, Classroom Modifications/Supports, and Behavior Plans, which affect the general education classes and teachers. Are students who wear glasses eligible for Vision Services under IDEA?
No. Vision services are part of DIS and require referral and eligibility for service.

Who signs as administrator on an IEP for a student attending a private/parochial/pre- school? Who is to attend?
Principal (or designee) of the student's D&I (neighborhood) public school signs as administrator. The minimum IEP team consists of the administrator as defined above, the District DIS or RSP staff, the parent or guardian, and a general education teacher from the private/parochial/pre-school.

Under Section VI, Eligibility, who specifically qualifies under multiple disabilities?
Students who meet more than one eligibility criterion.

If a student is Severely Impaired, must all placement options be discussed?
Yes.

Where do you enter frequency and duration for RSP services?
Under General Education Participation, enter appropriate percentage of time in general education with support/consultation and then enter specific frequency and duration on line below.

When should students be made eligible for Differential Standards?
Prior to completion of the eleventh grade. Students may not be promoted to twelfth grade without passing District proficiency standards or being declared eligible for Differential Standards. It is recommended that students be given every opportunity to pass the proficiency tests with modifications prior to establishing Differential Standards.

Where do DIS staff document progress and levels of performance?
Progress is documented on the goal pages. Current levels of performance are documented under section XXIII.

How are DIS assessment reports to be included in the IEP?
A summary of results is documented under section XXIV and the report is filed in the Assessment section of the Pupil Services (brown) file.

How do you fill out section VII for a "speech only" student?
Place a check next to Yes for number 3 under the discussion of Placement Options.

What sections must be completed to add a DIS service to an existing IEP?
Front page, sections VII and VIII, Addendum and signature page.

What if a DIS provider cannot attend an IEP?
Add the service as described directly above.
