Visiting Preschool
Special Day Classes
You may wish to visit some preschool
special day classrooms before your child’s IEP is completed. Visiting
the classrooms helps you make an informed decision as part of the IEP
team.
Before visiting, contact the school
or child development center and speak to the principal/site manager. The
principal or site manager will work with you to arrange for your visit.
While observing in the classrooms,
you may wish to ask yourself the following questions:
• Are the adults warm and responsive
to the children?
• Do the adults seem comfortable
with the children?
• What is the adult to child ratio?
(Adult to child ratio in special day classes for preschool age children
is 1 adult to 3 children.)
• How are the DIS services provided—pull
out or push in?
• Is there a data collection system?
• Is the classroom arranged so
children can move easily about the room?
• Is the classroom clean and safe?
• Are children given opportunities
for mainstreaming?
• Are children engaged in activities
that are developmentally appropriate for preschool children?
• Is the room cheerful in both
appearance and mood?
• How do adults facilitate language?
• Is the curriculum developmentally
appropriate?
• Are there modifications and adaptations
being made to the curriculum to meet children’s individual needs?
Please remember
when visiting to save your questions for later. Ask the teacher when would
be a good time to call so you can ask questions. We want the adults to
be actively engaged with the children.
