Provision Of Designated Instruction And Services

Ed. Code 56363.(a): Designated Instruction and Services (DIS) as specified in the IEP shall be available when the instruction and services are necessary for the pupil to benefit educationally from his or her instructional program. The instruction and services shall be provided by the regular class teacher, the special class teacher, or the resource specialist if the teacher or specialist is competent to provide such instruction and services and if the provision of services by the teacher or specialist is feasible. If not, the appropriate DIS specialist shall provide such instruction and services.

DIS Assessment Timeline/IEP Components

  • 15 days to develop assessment plan
  • 50 days to complete assessment and convene IEP
  • Copies of reports and recommendations to IEP committee
  • Eligibility statement

Recommended DIS And DIS Referrals on IEPs

  • Indicate the DIS service to be provided, including frequency/duration/delivery model, per specialist's recommendations.
  • Do not write "Referrals" for any DIS services on the IEP cover page under the DIS section. Referrals should be noted under Section "XXVI Referrals Made AT This Time" and the proper form(s) should be completed and submitted.
