About school notifications

When large group notifications must go out, SFUSD contacts families by phone, email and text message using a system called SchoolMessenger, which is one of the most widely used communications tools for PreK-12 districts. SFUSD and your school use SchoolMessenger in order to let you know about emergency situations, remind you about school events, update you on your child’s attendance and more.

We use the contact information from your enrollment application, emergency cards and Family Portal (ParentVUE), and sometimes your school may ask you for updated contact information. SFUSD and SchoolMessenger do not share any of your information, and we follow federal regulations on student and user privacy.

Receiving text messages from SFUSD

If your mobile phone number is entered into our information system, you will receive a text message from SFUSD via SchoolMessenger letting you know that SFUSD may send you text messages. The message will be sent from the number 67587 and will read:

You’re registered 4 SchoolMessenger messages. Txt STOP to quit, HELP 4 help. Std msg/data rates may apply. Freq varies. schoolmessenger.com/tm.

If you do not wish to receive more text messages from SFUSD, you can reply “STOP” at any time. However, we encourage you to receive text messages from SFUSD and your school, as it makes for faster communication, which is crucial in the event of an emergency.

If you accidentally unsubscribed from SchoolMessenger text messages, you can always text "Y" to 67587 to re-subscribe.

Changing your contact information or preferences

The best way to update your contact information and to ensure you receive district and school phone, email and text notifications is through your Family Portal (ParentVUE) account. Your Family Portal account gives you access to information about your student's learning, including attendance, grades, report cards and more.

If you do not have an account, you can request an activation code from your school site.

If you already have an account, learn how to update your contact information. Learn more about SFUSD's Family Portal

You can opt out of receiving messages via SchoolMessenger at any time. Simply click unsubscribe in any email to stop receiving messages—including emergency messages—from SFUSD, or follow the prompts at the end of a phone call to stop receiving non-emergency phone calls.
