Highlights for February 14-20, 2012: Valentine’s Day Singing, Wedding and Arm Flapping
Singer Tony Bennett will be entertained by the Ruth Asawa School of the Arts Jazz Band and vocal Chamber Ensemble, plus the SF Boys and Girls Choruses, SF Symphony, SF Gay Men’s Chorus, and Beach Blanket Babylon. Each group will perform their own version of “I Left My Heart in San Francisco” -Bennett’s signature song- to pay tribute to Bennett’s musical legacy.

On Valentine’s Day students at Galileo High will be lining up to get married to anyone they choose during the school’s “G-House Love Fest” day. The lunchtime ceremonies will include an ‘officiant,’ flowers, balloons, and certificates. The event is organized by the school’s Gay/Straight Alliance and Wellness Center to celebrate the day with tolerance toward others, making educated choices around sexual behavior and creating healthy relationships.

Sunset Elementary is holding its annual Fun Run "Healthy Hearts" in honor of Valentine's Day. Older students will stop at stations for more cardio exercises, and younger students will show off a "Funny Run" by flapping their arms like birds and hopping like kangaroos.

Physical education teacher Brenda Joyce Richard will be honored by the SF Board of Supervisors during their Black History Month celebration. Richard is noted for bringing the athletics and physical education program at Lawton K-8 to new levels. Under Richard's leadership, the school won four consecutive San Francisco Middle Schools Athletic League Girls Volleyball Championships (2007 through 2011).
