ExCEL Afterschool Programs

Changing fee structure to afterschool programs

In SFUSD, most school-based afterschool and summer learning programs are co-sponsored by SFUSD (the ExCEL program) and partnering community-based organizations. The majority are funded through city, state and federal grants. These grants are often awarded in three- to five-year-long cycles and are not guaranteed to be renewed once a grant cycle has ended. Unfortunately, the district has lost $3.3 million in competitive federal grants to support our afterschool program services to families. SFUSD has instituted a new fee structure.

ExCEL Afterschool Programs

The ExCEL Afterschool Programs mission is to create and sustain "safe havens" at public schools where students and community members can access expanded learning opportunities and integrated education, health, social service, and cultural programs in the out-of-school hours. Lead Agencies

ExCEL After School Programs demonstrates commitment to sustainability through partnerships with city and community agencies. Beyond ExCEL’s continual search for sustainable funds and partners, each after school sites’ participating agency contributes resources, both in-kind and in-cash, in order to fulfill their 50% match requirement. In addition, ExCEL After School Programs partners with San Francisco’s Department of Children, Youth and their Families to ensure that the funds from local children’s tax initiative supports the sustainability of ExCEL ASP programs and partners.
