Buena Vista celebrates the proud heritage of being San Francisco's oldest Spanish Immersion Elementary School, having served the community for more than a quarter of a century. The entire school is Spanish Immersion. Our mission is to produce students who are not only bilingual and biliterate—but who also have a strong sense of self, purpose, and place in our society. We are responsible, we are courteous, and we are safe! Cesar Chavez and Barack Obama's common message is heard quite frequently at Buena Vista as we connect the dots and unify over the Si Se Puede!, Yes we can! philosophy of overcoming adversity.
We know that it is important to provide art, dance and performing opportunities for the children to motivate themselves and to get in touch with their creative spirits. It is important for students to become fully engaged in meaningful curriculum that allows them to showcase the skills learned during the school days. Joyful learners have knowledge of technology, are engaged in learning at all times and provided hands-on activities. Children have the opportunity to visit the Mission Science Center, where they can enjoy and experience the wonder of the scientific process and see science "come alive". Teaching Staff work collaboratively to address all curricular areas, ensure academic growth for our students, and create opportunities for our families to be fully informed, empowered, and actively engaged in their children's education.

Opportunities for Parental Involvement
We have a robust PTA participation which organizes many school wide events allowing for many opportunities for parent/caregiver involvement. These activities include involvement with Carnival, Silent Auction, Read-a-thon, classroom trips and other cultural and fundraising events, including working with the 49ers! Parents/caregivers assist with the teaching of the visual and performing arts in the classroom as well as helping out with other tasks in the classroom and schoolwide. Caregivers and parents are involved with the Gifted Advisory Committee (GAC) and with the English Language Acquisition Committee (ELAC) advising the administration as to the needs of the students. Parent participation is a strong aspect of the culture of Buena Vista Alternative Elementary School and is highly valued by all.
