The Translation and Interpretation Unit (TIU) 

TIU acts as the essential bridge of communication between English Learning families and the San Francisco Unified School District. We are committed to provide quality and professional translation (written) and interpretation (oral) services to families so that they can become an active agent of their children’s education.

To engage families in conversations with the district and ensure their voices are heard, the team facilitates communication for families at both the school-site and district level, including at the Bilingual Community Council (BCC), District English Learners Advisory Committee (DELAC), Board of Education meetings, School Site Council (SSC) and various parent workshops.

Translation and Interpretation services are Federal and State requirements that mandate each school district in California to provide services and access to meaningful parent involvement. These requirements include The No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 (NCLB Act), Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 (Title VI), and the California Department of Education and the 2006 law AB 680 (D-Chan). They require the California Department of Education to notify school sites and their districts of their obligation to comply with the 15% threshold and to monitor adherence to the mandate through the Categorical Program Monitoring (CPM) process.

If you are a SFUSD employee and need translation and/or interpretation services for the English Learning families at your school site, please complete the request form here.

If you are a parent or guardian of SFUSD student(s), please complete one of the following request forms and return it to your school administrator.

*Due to high volume of requests, we ask you to give us two-week notice for translation needs and one-week notice for interpretation needs. In emergency situations, we will honor last minute requests and we ask you to notify us immediately regarding urgent needs.*
