| School health services function to support the educational program by working to maintain and improve the physical and mental health of students. A comprehensive school health services program includes, but is not limited to: Screenings, prevention, case finding, early intervention, first aid, remediation, and rehabilitation services. School health services are coordinated with services of other community-based agencies and professionals. Optimally, a system of school-based school-linked services can be established to provide comprehensive health services, social services, and mental health services to students and their families.
Health services program activities include: District-wide health services, including monitoring compliance with entrance immunizations, physical examinations and mandated screening programs, coordination of dental screening and education programs at the elementary levels, monitoring communicable diseases in schools, serving on school-site student success teams, case managing students with complex health needs, and referral of students with medical, social, and/or psychological concerns. Ongoing consultation about health-related problems and crisis situations are provided to school sites through the Nurse of the Day.
Comprehensive nursing services are provided at targeted elementary and middle schools. First aid manuals are provided to all child development centers and elementary, middle, and high school sites. Awareness sessions about universal precautions for bloodborne pathogens are conducted in all elementary, middle, and high schools. Condom availability programs are established in all high schools through partnerships with community health agencies and professionals. The School Health Center provides screenings, immunizations, TB testing, and comprehensive physical examinations for children from ages 3-12 with learning difficulties. |
