HEALTHY ENVIRONMENT
A healthy school environment refers to a physical environment (e.g., lighting, temperature, noise, graffiti) that is conducive to learning and a psycho-social environment that supports individual and family differences and promotes personal growth, wellness, and healthy relationships. Healthy environments are established and maintained through formal and informal policies and procedures.
Healthy environment program activities include:
- San Francisco Board of Education policies are established to address:
- Comprehensive Health Education
- Use of Tobacco, Alcohol, and other Drugs on Campus
- Anti-Slurs Based on Gender, Race, Ethnicity, and Sexual Orientation
- Condom Availability
- Students with HIV Infection
- Tuberculosis Testing
- Preschool Physical Examinations
- Immunizations and CHDP Reimbursed Services
- Blood Donations
- Cooperation with Disease Control Investigators
- Sexual Harassment
- Safety education, including earthquake safety procedures, are provided to students.
- Crisis response and grief counseling are provided by five person teams at all middle and high schools, two person teams at elementary schools, and site managers at Child Development Centers who have been trained to provide support to students and staff after various crises.
- Conflict management skills are presented to students and staff at selected elementary, middle, and high school sites.
- Gang violence awareness sessions are provided to school site staff and parents/caregivers by the SFPD Youth Programs Department.
- Law enforcement officers are assigned to all middle schools. Resource officers assist with student activities, including ropes courses, backpacking trips, safety/violence prevention and conflict resolution.
- Indoor Air Quality Management - assessment tools and action planning guides are provided to all sites. SHPD in collaboration with Facilities Development and Management Department is responsible for implementation of Board Policy P3335.
