Health-related physical education refers to planned, sequential instruction within the curriculum that focuses on health promotion (i.e., maintaining cardiovascular and respiratory fitness, improving endurance, strength, and flexibility). It includes fitness testing and instruction in lifetime individual and team sports (e.g., golf, tennis) which also can be used for stress management.
Health-related physical education program activities include:
- The Department of Physical Education and Athletics in accordance with California State Education Codes, provides students with required instruction in physical education. ES-200 minutes, MS-400 minutes, HS-2 years/400 minutes graduation requirement.
- Physical fitness testing and reporting is mandated in grades 5, 7, and 9.
- CPR training is provided to students in grades 8 and 10.
- In collaboration with the American Heart Association, elementary students participate in the Jump Rope for Heart program.
- School Health Programs Department staff provide professional development training for physical education teachers related to: substance use prevention and recognition/referral of students with asthma and other respiratory disorders.
