Health-related, psychological and Support Services
Health-related counseling and support services include a broad range of interventions designed to address the physical, mental, emotional, and social health of students. Formal partnerships between schools and community-based organizations provide additional health-related programs to students and their families. Procedures for identification, assessment, and referral of students needing assistance should be established and followed. A case management system will ensure that students receive appropriate health-related programs and services.
Health-related counseling and support service program activities include:
- Professional development related to counseling of students with health-related problems is provided to school-site counselors and deans.
- Peer helper programs established at all middle schools and selected high schools. Trained students serve as peer educators, peer tutors, conflict managers, and co-facilitators of student support groups.
- Counseling to students, their families, and staff related to school crises is provided by the district-level crisis response team and school site crisis response teams, as needed.
- Awareness training related to signs and symptoms of substance use is provided to middle and high school teachers and staff.
- Student assistance programs are established at all middle school sites. These programs are designed to delay, reduce, or discontinue use of tobacco, alcohol, and other drugs among students.
- Support groups for students facilitated and provided by school nurses, counselors and community based organizations.
- Support services for gay, lesbian, bisexual, transsexual, and questioning youth are coordinated through a system of designated adults at all middle and high school sites. Professional development is provided to designated adults, school site counselors, health educators, and others about health issues related to gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and questioning youth.
- Awareness sessions related to child abuse recognition and reporting is provided to all district staff.
- Case Management Systems and other methods are used to ensure meeting students needs.
- Student Success Team (SST) is a problem solving and coordinating structure that exists at each school site. It's two main functions are: Student focus to provide opportunities for school staff, parents and community agencies to present their concerns about individual students and through discussion and study develop a course of action to ensure student success. School focus to provide a forum for defining the needs of schools in the areas of curriculum, instruction and classroom management for professional development days.
