1997-98 SFUSD Professional Development Calendar

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT CALENDAR

The Professional Development Calendar is designed to provide information to employees of the SFUSD about opportunities available to them to enhance their professional growth. The focus of professional development in the SFUSD is determined by district goals and priorities along with individual and site determined areas of need. These focus areas are supported by the office of Curriculum Improvement and Professional Development in coordination with school operations and other district departments. Activities should emphasize building individual and site leadership capacity, collaborative endeavors, and model effective professional development strategies.

Following the guidelines for Professional Standards for the Teaching Profession, and the procedure for renewal of teaching credentials, professional growth activities are idenified primarily by school sites and through individual teacher growth plans. (Please review procedure described below.) As ongoing activities become available to teachers and administrators, they will be described on this Professional Development Calendar. The current format for this calendar will be to provide information about programs that:

  • Focus on major district priority areas
  • Are ongoing and collaborative in nature
  • Align with core curriculum and content and performance standards
  • Are a part of continuing programs that support core instructional areas
  • Are available and offered to a wide range of the teaching population.

Teacher's Individual Professional Growth Plans

Connecting Professional Development Activities to

Maintain California Teaching Credential and

Acquiring Increment Credit on Salary Schedule

Professional development is an inegral part of all programs and major objectives of the SFUSD. In order for teachers to be engaged in meaningful activities that meet their individual professional growth needs, as well as the priorities and objectives of the district, we are aligning the processes of acquiring those hours necessary to receive or renew a teaching services credential and those activities that can be used to earn district increment credit.

The SFUSD will incorporate procedures for district increment credit with the procedures described in The California Professional Growth Manual for Multiple and Single Subject Credentials and Services and Specialists Credentials. To do this:

  1. All administrators, school sites, and all teachers new to the district will receive a copy of this manual. Additional copies for other teachers are available through CIPD, 2550 25th Ave, Room 11A.
  2. "Professional Growth Advisors" will be identified as current site and central administrators who have received district training in "Professional Standards for the Teaching Profession," (Fall of each school year.)
  3. All teachers will follow the procedures described in the Manual to receive credit toward the 150 required hours for renewing a teaching credential.
  4. Professional development activities listed on the form required by the State must be approved by a professional growth advisor. Prior approval and verification of these activities will be based on common forms made available by the district.
  5. Increment credit will be based on these same planning and record forms.
  6. Appropriate activities are described in the manual.
