The following is a list of SFUSD newsgroups. If your computer
is set up to view these groups, click on the one of your choice.
If not, go below for directions, or see your network administrator.
What is Usenet News or Newsgroups?
Newsgroups are essentially electronic conferences on various topics. People connected to the Internet read and post news, messages, questions, answers, comments, etc on these topics.
Where is it located?
Information Technologies has set a News server which collects these messages every seven minutes and makes them available for reading. This server can be accessed by pointing your News software to: news.sfusd.k12.ca.us
How do I read news?
If you have Netscape 1.1, go to the Options - Preferences - News section (Netscape 2 & 3: Options - Mail and News - Servers) and set news.sfusd.k12.ca.us as your news server. Click OK. (This only has to be done once.)
When you want to read the news, go to either Directory or Window, depending on your version and click on News. Click on View All Newsgroups. The first time it will warn you that it needs to copy a lot of information off the District news computer; say OK. Clicking on titles that have a + opens up their folders to the news groups nested within. Adjacent to each newsgroup is a check box which you can check to subscribe, or turn off to "unsubscribe."
Earlier versions of Netscape show all messages in chronological order. People who follow newsgroups closely generally like to read the original message together with any replies to it. This is called a "threaded" newsreader. To do this, you will need Netscape 2.02 or later, or News software. There are both Mac and PC versions of News client software. A popular PC News client (recommended) is Free Agent by Forte. For the Mac, try Newswatcher. These can be found and downloaded to your computer by clicking the links below.
