ESL department meeting minutes 1/13/2005
Present: Fang, F; Mok, S; Zilch, E; Irving, G; Chan, C Absent: Collins (sick)
1. From the district's English department heads' meeting: - World lit; Ethnic lit; American lit and European lit will no longer be the title of the grade level English course.- The district has to certified to the State that the district has been using standards-based textbook. That's why the district is adopting textbooks for 9th and 10th grade English courses. Textbook Adoption criteria: 1. Diverse selection of literature 2. Availability of non-fiction selections 3. Assessments that match CST 4. Well-known short stories 5. Novel selection and availability/inclusion with the curriculum 6. Grammar materials 7. Book size 8. Scaffolding materials 9. Comprehensive text organized such that it can be used with/without always hung supplemental materials present. - Process: 1. Available materials 2. Representation across the board 3. Develop criteria 4. Rank the criteria 5. Find a concept or skill that is hard to teach and then compare where and how the concept or skill is taught. Side by side comparison. Do three or four of them. 6. Look at the accessment pieces 7. Try a lesson (in the Spring) from the final books within the same category and get input from students - Timeline and due days: 1. One day: orientation 2. Three public hearings 3. On public display 4. Present to the board's curriculum committee in March and April 2. From the Department heads' meeting: . We discussed the Williams Case - the thing you had to post in your classroom. Note that it does not imply that every student needs two books, one for the class and one for home. -. $33 million for SFUSD projects - supposedly a new Sci/Tech wing at Lincoln is in the mix. Construction will begin within 8 months. -. All Final Exams due to Armada. -. Sign the CLAD sheet near the sign-in. -. Looks like curriculum mapping for our inservice day. -. CST testing will start on 4/20. -. We discussed the idea of letting students self-nominate for school awards. -. A book suggested before the end of the semester. If all of your students don't have a book to take home, let me know.
