ESL department meeting minutes

2/13/2003

Block Scheduling Discussion:

1. Students lose instructional time. Instead of 52 minutes per period, we will be teaching 90 minutes per block. Students are losing 28 minutes each week.

2. Are we able to use the time to plan for the 90-minute block the most effective way as language teachers?

3. The schedule is too disruptive to marginal students. Students like routines and structure. Different start times would always present big time problems.

4. A couple of our teachers are teaching the same level of language and reading classes. Those teachers have to face the same group of students the whole morning or afternoon.

5. Students need everyday contact with the language that they are learning. This schedule prevents that from happening.

6. Some students, especially 9th graders, have a short attention span and would have a hard time to sit there for 90 minutes.

The department has voted not to support the block schedule proposal.
