ESL/Bilingual Department Meeting Minutes 2/24/2005
Present: Fang, F; Chan, C; Collins, R; Frediani, J; Irving, G; Mok, S; Zilch, E; Chu, A; Leung, C; Kaufmann, N; Chan, Y.M.; Jamshidi, A; Silberberg, M
1. Budget discussion:
The 2005-2006 spring planning budget sheet was distributed to all teachers. Compared to this school year's $84,561, we are getting $80,446 next school year. As a trend, we are getting more low English proficiency level and/or low performing students. Also, we will be having over 270 students who refused to accept SDAIE or bilingual classes. Therefore, we need to set aside some money to help these students. The money for afternoon tutoring will fund three teachers to work three days a week, one hour a day to provide tutoring in English/Social studies, math and science.
Some teachers asked if they could share the tutoring job with other teachers because they may not be able to commit themselves to that many days.
The budget was approved by all who present at the meeting.
2. Other concerns:
Ms. Kaufmann would like to purchase class sets of her Economics book because she found one that had lower reading level, and should be a good supplementary text. She would submit her request.
3. People who would like to tutor students:
English/Social studies: Selina Mok; George Irving Math: Science: Fang (can share with others); Mariotti (can share with others); Jamshidi This was the first time in this school year that EL teachers across the curriculum met and talked about issues that might affect teachers and students across different curriculums. We were glad that we had this chance to communicate with each other. |
