ESL/Bilingual Department Meeting Minutes 4/28/2005
Present: Fang, F; Irving, G; Chan, C; Collins, R; Frediani, J; Mok, S; Silberberg, M; Zilch, E
1. Feedback of the district's draft on program description and textbook recommendation - Would like to recommend Exploring English 1-4 published by Pearson Longman rather than Shinning Star for ELD 1-4. - Jamestown and Penguin Readers are not textbooks. Therefore, they are not good choices for reading program. There are good textbooks/anthologies available for that purpose. - Voices in Literature should be used for higher levels; not lower levels. Lower level Voices in Literature are perceived as silly by students. They become embarrassed.
2. WASC tasks: - Each member of each focus group needs to ask the department where and how to get the evidence that he/she is supposed to get. - Departmental task: gather student work samples to reflect how well students learn when compare to our ELD standards. Two teachers turned in their products: Irving and Mok.
