ESL/Bilingual Department Meeting

Minutes

1. Student placement issue:

Incoming students' placement may not be accurate because non-ELLs might put themselves into the EL category to get into Lincoln. Teachers should not send any students who claim to be misplaced to counselors or Mr. Fang before the ten-day count. Please use the attached form to record names of students who might be misplaced. After the ten-day count, I will conduct a research on these individual students to see which ones can be removed from our ELL list.

2. Department placement policy: please see attached. If we need to revise it, we can do that at one of our department meetings.

3. Book list: Books for each level/course are listed on your book list. Please review it and try not to issue books to students the first week because we are still in constant changes.

4. Expenditure requisition: please go see Mr. Chung or go to the main office to pick up a copy of the pink form. Also, the department has a supplies/books request form so that you can request supplies or books. Olga will be back on Monday to take care of your order.

5. Copy machine: we have not had a maintenance contract yet. Therefore, if we break it, it will be on us to fix it. Password has not been set, either. So please use the office service and library copy for emergency. We need to have a training session once we get the password.

6. Common Grading Policy: the department members discussed this issue and the importance of aligning standards to a common assessment. We agreed upon the following department common grading policy:

Participation: 20%
Homework: 10%
Writing assignments: 20%
Tests and Quizzes: 50%

The department will employ three common assessment tools across all courses:

Department's English Placement Test
CELDT
LALAR with supporting student portfolio

7. California State English Language Development Standards: they will be guiding our instruction and assessment. A common writing rubric will also be employed in the department.

The meeting was adjourned at 11:00.
