ESL Department Meeting

8/28/2003

Present: Fang, F; Frediani, J; Luini, J; Mok, S; Zilch, E

1. Students:

Many students who are placed in ESL were born here and seem higher level than their current placement. Fan Fang said that the placement was based on the district's recommendation, students' CELDT score, CAT6 score and LALAR. We have quite a few private school students who lack CELDT and LALAR scores but are on the district's ELL list.

Morning classes are usually larger than afternoon classes if they are doubletons. Can we balance them?

Some students think that their current class is too easy. The department has been doing:

- Testing: students are given English Placement Tests to determine their level

- Reclassification: we are reclassifying students who met the criteria. However, they might have to wait till next semester or next school year to be placed in regular because there is no room in the regular program for them.

Teachers: please do not encourage students to move out of your current classes because we might have to consolidate ESL teachers if our number is low. Also, some incoming students might claim that they were ELLs to get into Lincoln.

2. Supplies:

Please submit your wish list to Ms. G. There is a request box in the office. We will be doing a purchase soon.

3. Course synopsis and emergency lesson plans:

Please address the State ELD standards and try to align them to our ESLRS. Update your emergency lesson plan and course synopsis. Send a copy to Fang and a copy to Ms. Davis.

Meeting was adjourned at 3:30 p.m.
