ESL/Bilingual Department Meeting

Minutes

9/4/2002

Present: F. Fang, E. Zilch, J. Szabla, Y. Carlson, J. Luini, S. Selina, S. Leung, O. Galarza

1. September 5 afternoon meeting:

The meeting is very important because we were found out of compliance by the State's Special Education department. If we don't go to the meeting, the State may require us to attend a longer hour inservice.

2. Student levels and placement:

Some students may seem to have a lower English level in some classes but they have had all lower level credits already. We need to think of ways to help them rather than removing them from the class because they have nowhere to go.

It is suggested that additional attendance strips be made for level 1 and 2 students currently in our level 3 classes so that those students will not get level 3 credit and be promoted to level 5 next year.

The department rejected the idea of having an informal reading and writing assessment at each level because the department has an accurate English Placement Test. Also, we have the CELDT and LALAR assessment to look at when there is a need for multiple assessment. We have started the redesignation process and students who meet the redesignation criteria will be redesignated to regular. Again, the department's policy is: if a student needs to skip a level, he/she must have an "A" or "B" in last year's LD and RD classes and must obtain both LD and RD teachers' recommendation. For 9th grade students, they must pass the EPT to go to a higher level. (They must score 30 or better to go to level 5 and 40 or better to go to level 7.)

3. Budget:

Purchase/reimbursement request must be approved by Fan Fang then Gilbert Chung and/or Ericka Davis. Please read the e-mail that was sent to you yesterday.

4. Back to School night:

It has been decided that the ESL department members will not be using the library for parents to meet with each teacher. Teachers will be using their own classroom.

5. Emergency lesson plans and course syllabus:

Please send a copy of your ESL class syllabus to Fan Fang.
