ESL/Bilingual department meeting minutes 9/10/2003
1. Student enrollment update: The ten-day count, when taking special ed. into consideration, is 2435. If the district gives the new budget based on this number, the school will be consolidating two positions. Since some of the ELL classes are low in student numbers and one ELD teacher has not been hired, this position might be eliminated. There is a proposal to change all level one classes to level three and redistribute students to appropriate levels and to eliminate RD 7 and put those students to the literacy classes. The proposal needs all ELD teachers' written response. 2. Classes: There is a discussion on class changes. Some classes are small. Therefore, they might be consolidated. Mr. Chung is changing the math classes. There is a proposal to request that he also look at ELL classes at the same time because once students change their math classes, they will have to change ELD classes. Please make sure to submit your course synopsis and emergency lesson plan. 3. Placement policy/procedure: Teachers are reminded that we have a placement policy. The following procedure needs to be followed: a. send a list to Mr. Fang if there are students who want to change levels b. Mr. Fang will schedule a time for students to take the placement test c. the placement test result will be sent to the counselors with recommendations 4. E-mail update: those who have not submit the e-mail address to Mr. Fang should do so. 5. Wellness Center presentation: Suzy Lee, Mandarin speaking intern from SFSU's MFC (Marriage, Family, Children) Counseling program. She will be available to work with Chinese students/parents with various issues. The Wellness Center will also be able to help students who do not have medical insurance coverage. Students do not have to worry about whether they are legal or undocumented immigrant or not. Suzy will help to translate some publications into Chinese. |
