ESL/Bilingual Department Meeting Minutes

9/24/2003

1. Program update:

- One of Frediani and Zilch's classes will become World lit .6 and regular world lit combination. Students who exit from EL program will be going into those two classes.

- ELD level one and Reading level one will be converted to level 3 classes. None of the students in those classes belong in level one. The department does not recommend having level one and level three combination classes since we did have level one classes for lower level students. In fact, none of the recommended "level one" students are really level one, meaning, they know basic English such as the alphabets, days of the week, etc.

- Students who should be at level 5 are being processed.

2. From the department head's meeting (more details please read the meeting minutes):

Teachers should read the faculty handbook about procedures on field trip and inviting guest speakers. The administration needs to know about the district arranged field trips and regular field trip paperwork must be completed before going on a field trip. Do not park at the "NO Parking" zones with no parking signs clearly posted.

3. Paraprofessional schedule:

Teachers have put in their request for Olga. Priority goes to teachers who have multiple levels in their classes, or literature teachers who have students who cannot read.

The presented department members voted unanimously against a schedule that would allow Olga to work in the school's computer lab for some periods for the following reasons:

First, Olga is paid for by the LEP fund that is supposed to provide service to ELLs. It will be out of compliance if we use her as a regular technology paraprofessional. If the school hires a technology teacher, the teacher is supposed to work in computer labs to provide assistance to teachers who are using the lab, not the paraprofessional.

Second, ELD and literature teachers need support because there are many new comer students in their classroom this year and their English proficiency levels are low.

4. Fall budget review:

The Fall 2003 budget was presented to department members at the meeting. There is no change at the amount of money that we get. The department voted unanimously to increase the number of copies on the copier contract by decreasing the amount of money for the supplies.

Since we had two additional department meetings this month. Tomorrow, there will be no department meeting.

Meeting adjourned at 12:12 p.m.
