Abraham Lincoln High School English Learners' Advisory Committee Meeting

Minutes

03/02/2005

Present: Fang, F; Kosoy, R; Chung, G; Zilch, E; Mok, S; Huang, Miao Yan; Liou, C; Ding, X; Lakadat, J

1. Introduction:

Mr. Fang introduced the faculty members who attended the meeting.

2. Testing update:

In March, there will be high school exit exam for all 10th graders and 11th graders who have not passed the exit exam. Also, 9th graders will be taking the PE test on the same days. (3/15 and 3/16). In the last week of April, there will be the CST/CAT6 test, which will determine the school's API and students' next year placement in English and Math support classes. Parents should encourage students to make an effort to score well in those tests.

3. Budget:

Participants were given the Spring planning EIA/LEP budget. Some parents had questions about whether there would be enough teachers to provide after school tutoring. Mr. Chung pointed out that we would be working with an agency that had been providing after school tutoring to newcomer students. By bringing in people, we would be able to meet the ELLs' needs. Other parents wanted to know the difference between regular textbook and ELL textbook. Mr. Fang responded that textbook being used by ELLs are supplemental. Also, English language development courses and ELL reading courses are unique to our department. Students need to have textbooks for those courses. We are gradually replacing our department's textbooks.

The budget plan was approved unanimously.

4. Other questions or concerns:

Parents would like to know if all students could attend summer school.

Meeting adjourned at 7:30 p.m.
