Some notes about Chinese grammar and writing:

  1. 90% of the characters can be used to construct meaningful words. This is why you may encounter strange expressions like "no three no four" (dubious) or "give you some color see see." (teach you a lesson)
  2. Students from Hong Kong do not receive any instruction in Chinese grammar until they reach11th grade or never receive any instruction in grammar at all during their high school years. Students from rural areas in mainland China do not receive any instruction in grammar at all. Therefore, these students have no concept on any grammatical terms in either Chinese or English.
  3. Literature study is introduced in college only. Therefore, K-12th grade Chinese immigrants may have no prior knowledge on "setting," "character," "plot," "climax," "figurative language," "tone," "mood," and anything that has to do with rhymes.
  4. Most Chinese immigrants have no training in any kinds of essay writing. Concepts such as "theme," "introductory paragraph," "summary," "topic sentence" are new to them. Educators in China have been paying so much attention to teaching the writing of prose that they actually make every student to write anything like a prose.
  5. The following elements do not exist in Chinese grammar:
subjunctive mood
tenses
articles
clauses
plural forms
