Frequently Asked Questions about Lincoln High School's ESL/Bilingual Program:1. My Child has never taken any ESL classes, why is he/she placed in your ESL program? When parents register their child through the district's Educational Placement Center, if they state that the student's home language is not English, their child will be given an English test. If the child does not pass the test, he/she will be identified as an English Language Learner (ELL). Parents can refuse ESL/Bilingual service, but the child is still an ELL until he/she meets the reclassification criteria. This year, some seats are reserved at Lincoln high school for students who chose to enroll in our ESL/Bilingual program. If these students refuse ESL service, they may not come to Lincoln. 2. How does my child exit ESL program? By taking all regular class does not mean that you have exited your status as an ELL. You have to go through the Reclassification process to exit ESL program even you are mistakenly placed by the district into this program. You must meet the following criteria to exit ESL program: a. Score 36 percentile in both math and reading section of the STAR9 (CAT6) test b. Score 4 or above in the California English Language Development Test (CELDT) c. Obtain "Advanced" or above in the district's LALAR assessment d. Obtain "C" or above grade in your English, Math, Science and Social Studies class 3. If my child is in ESL program, will this affect his/her chance to enter a 4-year university? No. All ESL courses at Lincoln, except low level English Language Development courses, are recognized by University of California and meet the four-year university's admission requirement. When students send their official transcript to apply for admission to a college, their transcript will not show "ESL" anywhere and all the ESL course titles will be the same as regular ones. Report card grade and whether the course meets UC's requirement are more important than whether a student is in ESL or not. 4. What kind of ESL/Bilingual services are provided by Abraham Lincoln High School? a. English language development and content area courses b. Chinese bilingual courses and Chinese Language Arts Honors courses c. ESL teachers' and paraprofessionals' lunch time and after school tutoring d. Community after school tutoring program: Room 145 -- Family in Transition Program 5. For more information, please visit: our website
