LANGUAGE AND LITERACY ASSESSMENT RUBRIC K-12

BEGINNING LEVEL (ESL 1-2)

ORAL LANGUAGE

  1. Dramatizes/gestures/draws pictures to show comprehension/needs
  2. Gives basic personal information; expresses personal/safety needs.
  3. Names principal locations; familiar objects.
  4. Responds appropriately; thoughtfully/actively to simple commands; questions; through actions or one/two-word
  5. Makes recitations/simple presentations
  6. Begins to speak to peers/ in some small group situations.

READING

  1. Follows along in text as story is read aloud.
  2. Demonstrates book sense; tracking/locating cover
  3. Author; title/matching pictures to words
  4. Identifies/associates written symbols; recognizes/ identifies letters
  5. Reads simple narratives of routine behaviors
  6. Enjoys being read to; demonstrates comprehension/sequencing
  7. Constructs meaning from text through illustrations and other non-print features.

WRITING

  1. Uses invented spelling and familiar words or short phrases.
  2. Copies simple text and or environmental print to communicate.
  3. Writes primarily about experiences and retells stories written.
  4. Writes statements/questions on familiar topics/on visual prompt.
  5. Writes to describe a drawing or illustration.
  6. Uses some conventions of print including spcacing between words, names and letters (e.g. mechanics explicit to language)

INTERMEDIATE LEVEL (ESL 3-4)

ORAL LANGUAGE

  1. Uses a variety of verbal/non-verbal strategies.
  2. Expresses a range of personal needs/preferences
  3. Asks for clarifications in different situations.
  4. Identifies main topic/details of stories/lectures retells sequence of events.
  5. Speaks in class on topic, may lack organization.
  6. Expresses responses in phrases/simple sentences
  7. Speaks comfortably with peers in small groups.

READING

  1. Responds to text in various modes such as drawing, mapping and diagramming.
  2. Reads/follows simple written directions.
  3. Recognizes main topic/supporting details of a reading selection; summarizes the section.
  4. Uses dictionaries to define works (e.g. maintain a personal dictionary of important new words)
  5. Chooses appropriate pleasure reading materials independently.
  6. Locates/identifies specific facts in a text.
  7. Constructs meaning from texts containing background knowledge relevant to student’s experience.

WRITING

  1. Participates in revising/editing own work.
  2. Uses a variety of genres in writing
  3. Write short answers to questions
  4. Creates original paragraphs using appropriate conventions of print.
  5. Generates ideas for simple stories with awareness of sequence/detail

ADVANCED LEVEL (ESL5-6)

ORAL LANGUAGE

  1. Critiques a movie/book orally.
  2. Communicates in new/unfamiliar settings.
  3. Demonstrates understanding of idiomatic expressions & colloquialisms in different registers.
  4. Uses age appropriate vocabulary.
  5. Contributes to classroom discussion/responds to questions clearly/debates issues
  6. Communicates ideas/information orally with increasing confidence/sophistication of audiences; purposes

READING

  1. Reads across variety of genres; identifies features of different reading materials (e.g theme, plot, characters, genre).
  2. Interacts with text by keeping a reading response journal.
  3. Expands vocabulary using (translation) dictionary/thesaurus
  4. Reads independently; chooses increasingly difficult texts; makes predictions/inferences about readings..
  5. Reads with considerable fluency & comprehension: begins to comprehend highly decontextualized text/complex vocabulary

WRITING

  1. Uses graphics to present/describe data; writes about the data.
  2. Applies the steps in the writing process to writing tasks.
  3. Takes accurate notes on new/unfamiliar material.
  4. Demonstrates variety of vocabulary choice sentence types, and organization of written discourse.
  5. Creates several connected paragraphs using appropriate conventions of print.
  6. Writes from various points of view; with different purposes/audiences; develops fluency/style voice

FLUENT/TRANS.L2 (ESL7-8, LITERATURE .6)

ORAL LANGUAGE

  1. Understands/uses native-speaker cultural references
  2. Discusses abstract, academic content/concepts
  3. Produces a full range of grade-appropriate grammatical structures; vocabulary in unfamiliar settings
  4. Engages/interacts effectively; productively in discussion

READING

  1. Makes predictions/inferences about readings on all topics including abstract ones.
  2. Actively pursues own reading interests.
  3. Uses variety of reading strategies to construct /examine;extend the meaning of diverse materials.
  4. Reads independently from a wide range of materials while evaluating/analyzing text.
  5. Reads/comprehends grade-level text with complex language/vocabulary

WRITING

  1. Writes on all topics normally required for the grade level.
  2. Uses writing to get and give information.
  1. Writes with a strong understanding of conventions of written language.
  2. Uses rich, expressive vocabulary.
  3. Identifies a central idea and writes from an organizational plan.
  4. Writes expository text that is clear, consistent and organized.
  5. Experiments with variety of writing styles/genres, including fact, fiction, persuasion, comparison
