Program description
Chinese language arts
-
Chinese Primary Language Arts 5C and 6C Honors is the first
advanced Chinese primary language arts honors course recognized by the
University of California system in the State of California. It
provides both Chinese as native language students and Chinese
immersion students an honor course to further develop advanced Chinese
literacy skills while earning honors credits.
-
Chinese Primary Language Arts 1-8 is a four-year literature-based
advanced primary language arts course emphasizes the Five C’s
(Communication, Communities, Cultures, Comparisons and Connections) as
described in Standards For Foreign Language Learning: Preparing for
the 21st Century by the U.S. Department
of Education, for students (including Limited English Proficient,
Fluent English Proficient and Chinese immersion students) who are
literate in Chinese (equivalent to China or Taiwan’s 7th
graders’ Chinese level) to further develop their speaking, reading,
and writing skills in Chinese. The language of instruction will be
100% in Chinese. This course will also focus on facilitating
students’ positive transferring of literacy skills to second
language acquisition, promoting community involvement, career
awareness and technology application.
- English Language Development and
English literature SDAIE
-
Students take three
years of English as a Second Language class.
There are three
levels:
Beginning level: ESL
level 1 and 2
Intermediate level:
ESL level 3 and 4
Advanced level: ESL
level 5 and 6
- Transitional level: ESL 7
and 8
-
Each year, students
must take one ESL language development class and one ESL reading
class, except Advanced level students, who take one ESL language
development class and one grade level English/Literature class.
After a student
finishes three years of ESL courses, he/she will be transitioned to
English/Literature SDAIE courses by grade level. We offer four
English courses that are accepted by the University of California to fulfill
the English /literature course requirement for admission. These
courses are:
9th grade English
10th grade English
American Literature
European/English
Literature
- SDAIE classes
-
SDAIE stands for Special
Designed Academic Instruction in English
At Abraham Lincoln High
School, we offer a wide variety of SDAIE classes in most subject areas
that help our English Language Learners to meet the high school
graduation requirements and/or University of California "a to
f" admission requirements. In these classes, students use the same
core text books that the regular English speaking students are using,
but the teachers employ ESL/sheltered English methodology to teach.
Therefore, students will not be hindered by their lack of English
language competency to handle the course work in different subject
areas.
-
- English plus Chinese
-
- We offer a
comprehensive Chinese bilingual education program that meets the
graduation requirement of San Francisco Unified School District. Some
courses meet the UC's "a to f" requirement. Students take
these classes through a parent waiver application.
The courses that are
instructed in Chinese (School Year 2005-2006) are:
 | Biology
 | 9th grade Integrated
Science |
 | Modern World History |
 | US History |
 | Algebra |
