Mathcounts Peace Patrol The Peace Patrol meets Thursdays during lunch in Room 100. The group members solve conflicts, give each other empathy, and discuss strategies to have student voices heard for what they want and need in school. Peace Patrol members raised $150 for Katrina victims and discovered there were families displaced by the hurricane with children attending Visitacion Valley Middle School. Two gift certificates will be personally delivered to the students at school. The principal, Jim Dierke, will have a pizza lunch for the students to meet each other when the certificates are delivered. World Friendship Club The World Friendship Club is sponsored by Ms. Bjornson and meets in Room 209. Because the club responds to various and unpredictable emergencies and problems, meetings are announced in the bulletin, whenever they are needed. The purpose of the World Friendship Club is to foster idealism and a sense of social responsibility, to provide opportunities for doing good in the world, and to encourage peace and friendship. Club activities have included: • Sending emergency supplies and cards in response to disasters. For instance: boxes of medical supplies and cards to New York and Washington, D.C. after 9/11; donations of food, clothing, stuffed animals, and money to victims of Hurricane Katrina; handmade cards of condolence to the parents of the children killed in Baslan, Russia. • On-going projects to help the homeless in San Francisco (such as “Friendship Kits” containing personal hygiene supplies and handmade cards expressing messages of encouragement and hope). • Donations to Sunset Youth Services and to Glide Memorial for their food pantries. • Sponsorship of a Trick or Treat for UNICEF drive. • “Lunchtime Friends in 209” (featuring the music and food from different countries). • Friendship Gardens and Peace Gardens. • Penpals and Secret Pals. Everyone is welcome to join the World Friendship Club! |
