School Programs and Activities
Homework and Reading Expectations
In middle school, parents can expect that their child will have approximately twenty minutes a night of homework per academic class. Sometimes this homework will be a short assignment, requiring only one evening. Other times, the assignment may require more than one night. An example might be a long term project, such as the Science Fair Project.
Reading is at the core of all language arts and other academic classes. Students are expected to read assigned short pieces and complete books at the direction of their teachers and to read titles of their own choosing. A certain amount of time is set aside, at the individual teacher’s discretion, for in-class reading. Parents should encourage and monitor their child’s reading choices at home. You can refer to their state STAR test results or the state superintendent’s website to get a recommended reading list. Your student also has access to the Accelerated Reader book list in the APG Library. This list may also be viewed online: Giannini AR List. Please make it a routine to go to the library together.
Student Officers
Student body officers meet bimonthly to plan student body activities. Students who have a GPA of 2.0 or higher and satisfactory citizenship are eligible to run for a student body office or be one of two homeroom representatives. Student Council meetings are held after school on the 3rd Wednesday of the month in the library.
Clubs
Students are encouraged to participate in clubs in order to have a more enjoyable school experience and to develop social skills in a cooperative group setting. Some of our clubs are student government, computers, yearbook, diversity, Math Counts, drama, photography, Peace Patrol, cooking, and ecology.
Fund-raisers
Fund-raisers are held throughout the year to raise money for the 6th, 7th, and 8th grade treasuries. The major fundraiser, which is held in the fall, is the magazine sale. All students participate in this activity, and the monies collected by them go into their respective grade’s fund. All parents are urged to wait to renew or order magazines. In addition, the PTA has a Jaguar Educational Fund to supplement school funding.
Sports
There are after-school competitive sports. Students who are interested may try out for a team, if they maintain a 2.0 GPA. Physical exams and medical release forms are needed before students can participate in a team sport. For students who plan to play team sports, a physical exam is required each year before tryouts.
Fall Sports: Boys Baseball, Girls Softball (Coach Waiblinger and Coach Deppmeier)
Winter Sports: Soccer (coed) (Coach Waiblinger); Boys and Girls Basketball (Coach Barry and Coach Deppmeier)
Spring Sports: Boys and Girls Track (Coach Deppmeier and Coach Terjesen)
Girls Volleyball: (Coach Tam)
Dances
Dances are held for Halloween, Winter Holiday, Valentine’s Day, and Spring every year. The dances are held at the school from 3:15 - 5:00 PM. At the end of the year, there is a graduation dance for eighth graders only. Only APG students may attend the dances.
