Promotions, Awards, and Recognition
Honor Roll
A. P. Giannini has an honor roll. A student must earn at least a 3.00 GPA (B average) and have no U’s in citizenship. High Honors are students with a 3.67 to 3.99 GPA and no Unsatisfactory in citizenship. The Principal’s Honor Roll is reserved for students with a 4.00 GPA. All honor roll students receive certificates of recognition and are acknowledged by the posting of each six week’s Honor Roll in the showcase near the main office. In addition, 4.00 students and their parents are honored at a PTA-sponsored Scholarship Tea. At the end of each semester, an “On the Rise” reception will be held to honor students who have improved their GPAs.
Positive School Environment
The Positive School Environment Program was developed to give each student many opportunities to have a good feeling about their school and school experience. The program has the Winners Circle, the Ecology Campaign and Activity Day. There is also a Student of the Week, homeroom attendance banners, certificates, and ice cream treats.
Promotion
We look forward to the time when the eighth graders graduate and move on to high school. However, there are specific requirements for graduation, and there are some circumstances where graduation may be in jeopardy. Sixth and seventh grade students who fail four or more subjects during the year will not be promoted to the next grade level. An eighth grade student who receives passing grades in nine or more classes, reaches the age of 15 while in middle school, or has been retained twice in any other grade will be accelerated to the ninth grade.
If a student has four or more unsatisfactory citizenship marks on the final fall and spring semester report cards, the student will be denied participation in promotion/graduation ceremonies and activities.
Graduation Awards
There are seven graduation awards to be won by 8th graders for academic, service, and social achievements. Winners are selected by special committees of administrators, counselors and teachers. Awards are presented during the graduation ceremony.
Service Awards
The Service Point System is designed to reward students for activities performed outside of class and which reflect credit on A. P. Giannini, such as: to hold an office, participate in band, orchestra, or choir concerts, work in library or office outside of class time, have perfect attendance, get E’s on their report card, assist teachers, and participate in clubs. These points are cumulative 6th through 8th grade and awards are presented each June and at graduation.
Sports Awards
Sports awards are given to students at the annual Jaguar Sports Dinner held in May.
