Support Services
Parents are encouraged to get to know their student’s counselor. This person will be your student’s counselor for his/her three years at APG. Counselors can be a parent’s first point of contact when needing questions answered. Counselors provide individual and group counseling as needed, academic and/or attendance counseling, introduction to community and health resources, and orientation to high school and college programs.
Students can meet with counselors before after school, or in an emergency, permission can be obtained from a teacher to meet during class time.
6th Grade Counselor: Jonah Backstrom
7th Grade Counselor: Pat Jones
8th Grade Counselor: Katherine Goshgarian
How to Monitor Grades
Ask your student to show you his/her binder reminder and completed work at least once a week. Ask your student to explain to you how assignments are being graded. Progress reports are mailed home every 6 weeks and final semester transcript grades are mailed home every 18 weeks.. Teachers will make contact by phone or note home if your student is in jeopardy of earning a grade below a C or below satisfactory in citizenship.
If you are concerned about a particular class(es) your student is enrolled in you can contact his/her counselor and/or the individual teacher(s).
How to Contact a Teacher
Parents may call the school and ask for a particular teacher during his/her prep-period or leave a message with the secretary to have the teacher call them back. Parents can also call the student’s counselor to ask for help contacting a teacher. Parents/Guardians may e-mail individual teachers (see the Teachers page of this website) and/or write a note in the binder reminder.
If a parent would like to talk with a teacher and translation is needed, please contact the grade level counselor and arrangements will be made.
Tutors
Tutorial services are provided to all students who would like extra help with their assignments. Tutoring is available with teachers, instructional aides, community helpers, and in the after school Beacon program.
How to Volunteer: Join the PTA or SSC
Everyone benefits when more adults are involved with our children. Come into the front office and introduce yourself to the secretaries and let them know how and when you can help out. Below are just a few suggestions.
