Technology
Machines in Motion

Bryant Elementary School, A Pacific Bell Education First Demonstration Site

Instructors: Yvette Fagan
Grade Level: 3-5, reverse full-inclusion

This multi-year project is designed to introduce students to many of the basic principles of physical science through designing and building models which move through such means as gears and pulleys, levers, gravity, and magnetism. Students use building toys such as Connectix, plus batteries, magnets, and other resouces. Students integrate studies of math science and technology as they investigate various forms of energy and energy convervation needed to launch a series of machines into motion. Students particpate in creating a Webpage which highlights their work, and use email and videoconferencing to share ideas with others.

The unit was designed for a multi-age group of students in a reverse full-inclusion class, in which one -half of the student are special education students and one-half of the students are general education. This type of class structure requires that the curriculum be able to handle a broad base of learning styles, is interactive, offer multiple paths to learning and encourage a sense of community. The unit could be used successfully in grades three and up.

What the students have done is phenomonal! The students built these machines, know how they work, and can fix them.
