Cabrillo School, located in the heart of the Richmond District, was opened in 1926. It was rebuilt and dedicated in 1974. Our culturally diverse student body comes from the surrounding neighborhood, Presidio Children's Center and the housing located in the GGNRS (formerly the Presidio). All of the students are treated with respect and dignity, recognized for their achievements, and given opportunities to learn in various ways. This includes the cognitive, creative and affective dimensions of learning. The staff provides a comprehensive curriculum that stresses academic excellence with an emphasis on physical education and visual and performing arts. Studnets participate in a variety of programs offered by the Fine Arts Museum, Exploratorium, Academy of Sciences, Modern Art Museum, AIM (symphony program for grades 4/5), Red Cross, Jump For Your Heart, Richmond YMCA Health and Fitness Program and Math-athon. They also attend performances given by the symphony, opera, ballet, semi-professional theatrical groups, and performances on site. The students contribute to the safety, attractiveness and governance of the school by serving on the Student Council, Litter Patrol, and as class monitors/officers. There are seventeen classes in the school: among them are GATE clusters, Chinese Bilingual and English Language Development. Cabrillo School has been a continuing participant in the Clinical Schools Project of SFSU for the past nine years and is now a part of the Galef Institute program, DWOK-Different Ways of Knowing.
