What's Next, 8th Grade?

By: Tony Chan

You all know what comes after 7th grade, 8th grade. That means a new year, some new teachers and a new schedule. So you're going to face piles of homework, hard essays, various projects, high school preps and new expectations. You got to get prepared because you never know what those teachers are gonna throw at you. All the work might get stressful, but that's part of 8th grade you just need to relax and do your best. Just try to make the best of it.

During the first couple weeks 8th grade might seem easy, but as you go along you'll get more homework, essays and projects. On the days with a lot of homework it can take hours to do, and add in an essay or a project that really takes a lot of time. Doing homework could take from an hour to even four, so yourself plenty of time to do all your work.

Isn't it easy when they tell you what you need to write in essays? Of course it is, but in 8th grade they pretty give you a topic like a person and basically you just write an essay on them. The teachers expect you to know what to write, because in high school is going to be that way. However you can still ask teachers for help and you ask some of your classmates if you need help.

When you work on projects, the ones that stick out usually get good grades. Sometimes a project might not look the best, but if you can present it in an exciting, funny, or different way, you can make your bad project into something good. It's also good to try to use as much of the time you have to work on it. Projects sometimes are a group effort, and if you don't work as a team, well it basically won't work. Basically 8th grade has more homework, essays and projects, so you might as well start to rely on yourself and actually do your work.

With high school so close your GPA is important, so you're going to need to do the best in class. To get that A in a class may depend on how well you learn it. When your in 8th grade learning might be harder or easier, but its important to know what you learn and not just forget it. Sometimes class might get really and I mean really boring, but if you want to know the info you could always ask a classmate who pays attention, the teacher or look the info over in your spare time.

Most of your grade is going to be from your tests/projects/presentations, and a bit from your homework, so knowing what is taught is important. Studying usually takes up a lot of time, but putting an extra hour can give you a good grade. There are a couple ways to study, I suppose you can take notes on the important facts, people and events and read that over or you can just read the whole chapter/section over memorizing notes along the way. If you not so sure on studying, study with a friend like in a group.

Besides tests the behavior affects your citizenship. The 8th grade teachers can be a bit mean depend on who they are, most expect you to be quiet, listen, do your work and not fool around, you know, the basics. A basic rule is in the beginning of the year suck up to the teachers and gives a good impression, because that could help your teachers attitude toward you (Note: Won't work on all teachers). Throughout the year it's good to not too mess around, because if you get too many us you're not going to graduate on stage and attend all this other fun stuff. It's a 40-point system where you start with 40 and keep losing points till you hit zero. It's fun to mess around sometimes, but too much and you'll pay in consequences.

Overall being in 8th grade just means your getting to be more mature, and ready to graduate and go to high school. 8th grade has more work, buts its to help you prepare for high school. Expectations are higher because your going to be the oldest at the school and you should be mature by then. All the things like homework, studying, presenting pretty much getter harder as you grow up so get used to it.
