Mr. Don Papa’s Class Share What Democracy Means To Them

It all started with the grand dreams of great American intellects. Daring and courageous enough to think the unthinkable and to pursue the impossible, they were the ones who first gave birth to our Constitution of freedom and justice. Our founding fathers, such as Madison and Jefferson, created a land of order through a government, and a country of freedom through democracy. These men dared to dream not only of their own futures, but the futures of generations to come. What resulted was a libertarian country for the oppressed to call home. However, America’s democracy hangs precariously from a thread due to the recent attacks on the World Trade Centers and the Pentagon, acts of ill will towards our economic prosperity and refined government. Once again, American citizens have been reverted to a high-alert state of wartime of which America’s new generation cannot conceive.
After overcoming British tyranny and winning our independence, the ratification of our US Constitution was the awakening of a nation that would change the world in unimanagable ways. The ideas of freedom and natural rights were not simply contained within our borders; they illuminated and revolutionized the entire world. The Vietnam War stands as an example of the defense of American policy abroad. This far off war was fought to ensure our political, future well being by preventing the “domino effect.” The fight against communism in the World Wars also stands as evidence where the US fought to uphold her belief of containing communism. Though young as a nation, our influence on other countries has made lasting not only politically, but also concerning the everyday lives of foreign citizens. Today, it is important to be globally aware when viewing our future because other countries are ultimately going to shape and influence the political and economical policies of the US.
Rome was not built in one day; neither was America. From the day America became a Republic, there has always been equality issues like the moral dilemma of slavery. However, we are a nation that acknowledges its past wrongs and struggles toward reform, as seen in the Civil Rights movement, the Woman’s Suffrage Movement, and Social Reformation. It is evident that throughout history there has always been momentum towards social justice. We came a long way in creating a society of equal opportunity, where brainpower and sweat can produce success.
America stands for democracy, liberty, freedom, and for many, a beacon of hope. Human beings were being destined to be freed from the oppressive chains of tyranny. Presently however, democracy is on the line, and America’s bright future is overcastted by the heinous acts of terrorisms. Our liberties are more precious now than ever, and many eyes have been opened to what has been taken for granted for so long. Bio-terrorism attacks have put life in constant danger. The possibility of anthrax in the mail is a containing worry in our minds. However, Americans are a resilient people, ready to bounce back and recover, as seen after the disastrous bombings of the Twin Towers and the Pentagon.
America’s future represents one of
hope, though the attack has shaken many’s faith in our government. Through
these tribulations, Americans must embrace a sense of forbearance,
patience, and restraint from any rash or impulsive action. Democracy will never
be as tightly protected as it can be now.We once stood unified
as the United States of America during our developing days as a nation, and
today, unsurprisingly, we still remain united against any odds that may come at
us.
