SENIOR RESEARCH PROJECT OVERVIEW

 

The Senior Research Project is a graduation expectation for all students of Galileo Academy.  Every student is expected to conduct a research project.

 

What is the Senior Research Project?

 

The Senior Research Project will provide you with the opportunity to demonstrate your knowledge and skills learned throughout your high school career. This project should represent an area of interest you wish to pursue through rigorous research and support from your teachers , group project members and other consultants.  

 

How Will You Be Evaluated?

 

Progress on your project will be regularly monitored and evaluated. You will submit your Senior Research Project on Tuesday, January 22, 2002, to your English/ELD teacher. You will present your project in the spring semester to faculty, staff and students. Refer to the SENIOR RESEARCH PROJECT TIMELINE.

 

 

 

SENIOR RESEARCH PROJECT GUIDELINES

 

Students should read the SENIOR RESEARCH PROJECT TIME LINE .  Every student is responsible for meeting the Senior Research Project due dates.

 

q      Can be conducted individually or in a group of no more than 3 students.

q       Must use at least 5 sources, including 2 books

q       Must be in student’s own words, not plagiarized or copied.  Plagiarism is taking and copying someone’s work and/or ideas without giving proper credit. A plagiarized paper is unacceptable and will need to be rewritten.

q       Must not be a term paper or book report. Must have a clearly stated thesis, supporting statements and a conclusion.

q       Must be 10 - 15 pages of text, double-spaced, 12 point Times or Palatino font and have maximum 1-inch margins all around.

q       Must prove or disprove your thesis.  

q         May include graphics. Must be presented orally with every group member participating.  

q       May include visual aids with your oral presentation. 

q      Your optional PowerPoint presentation will be a summary of your 10 to 15 page Senior Research Project.

 

 

STEPS TO A SUCCESSFUL SENIOR RESEARCH PROJECT

 

1)        Choose a specific topic.  Refer to APPENDIX.

2)      Organize your notes and bibliography. (suggestion: note cards)

3)      Prepare a working bibliography.

4)      Begin writing your paper, using the process writing method.

a.      Brainstorm ideas.

b.     Use graphic organizers or outlines.

c.      Write the first draft.

d.      Peer edit.

e.      Revise the first draft.

5)    Write the final Senior Research Project with footnotes.

6)    Write the final bibliography. 

7) Proudly present your Senior Research Project.

 

EVALUATION

 

Research Projects will be rated as Outstanding, Good, and Marginal.  All Marginal projects are required to be re-submitted after revision.   Incomplete projects are deemed Marginal until completed and successfully evaluated.

 

 

·        Outstanding:  You have gone beyond what is required and demonstrated important skills and abilities.

 

·        Good:  You have met all minimum requirements for the project and demonstrated important skills and abilities.

 

·        Marginal:  You have not met the basic requirements for the project, and your project is incomplete and/or did not demonstrate important skills and abilities. You will need to revise/rewrite your project.

 

** The SENIOR PROJECT CRITERIA will list the point values of each part of your project and presentation.  Your grade will depend on the content of your project (less on the graphs/pictures/photos/etc.), your knowledge of your topic, and your presentation.
