English Plus Chinese Program

The English Plus Chinese Program is designed to develop language fluency and literacy in both English and Chinese through a standards-driven curriculum. These are the unique characteristics of our program:

• separation of languages
• content areas taught in designated languages
• team teaching model
• assessment-driven instruction
• monthly meetings
• parent workshops
• special events/celebrations

IIn 1994, our staff participated in the Optimal Learning Environment training (OLE). This conference inspired us to see teaching as a cycle in which teachers learn, implement, evaluate, reflect, and refine teaching practices. Through our many discussions, the program has identified specific characteristics which promote active learning:

• print-rich environment
• application of skills through projects or extensions
• using students' prior experiences or knowledge
• authentic uses of language
• reading and writing across the curriculum
• engaging students in fun ways of learning
• use of technology
• libraries
• room environment (centers, lofts, whole group areas)
