My class begins the year learning the basics of the game of chess. I have, over the years, developed a series of lessons that enable them to understand the fundamentals of the game.

This process includes the use of computer chess programs, a large demonstration board, and a number of chess sets.

After my students have a good understanding of the basics we host a chess club for the rest of the school during the Friday lunch periods.

My class, as hosts, run the club. Every student has some task during half of the club's time and then is free to play with the other students, or on the computers.

Together we manage to keep track of who comes to the club, teach others how to play, and show the visitors how to keep records.

In May of each year there is a field trip to a special event where players from Hillcrest's Chess Club meet players from other schools, this is usually in the first week of May. Everyone from my class goes on the field trip, however we use the records we have kept to determine which of the visitors will join us on the field trip.
