Science!

This year we have observed how seeds develop and change as they grow. Our records were written, and drawn.

After this we watched how plants grew and because the plants that we were working with did not all grow alike, we began some experiments to see what effects light, water, temperature, caring, and soil have on a plants growth. We have presented our results at the annual Science Night, many were impressed with our efforts.

Music!

We have already performed in the Spring Assembly. We were absolutely great. Several teachers told Mr. Brady that they were very, very impressed. We sang for two assemblies presenting songs from around the world. We performed also for the annual Arts Night, and for the Fifth Grade Promotional Ceremony, a tradition of participation that goes back several years.

Reading!

Our home reading program is doing very well. We had three parties during the course of the 2001 2002 school year, celebrating our participation in a great program. We have read hundreds of books. In B6there is a record of them, a paper chain that wrapped around the room more that two times.

Math!

We have used a computer program that helped us learn some basic math facts. We practiced over the course of a few weeks and when we took a test we all had improved a great deal. And it was fun.

A wonder full achievement this year.

The Home Reading Program, which several teachers have pioneered over the last few years at Hillcrest, has become more and more of a success. Each year more students, enjoy more books, and so their reading improves.

A good example of parents, students and teachers working togather to make success for all a reality at Hillcrest Elementary School.

Above, looking one way from the center of the school's yard and to the side looking the other way. Each link in the chain represents one book that some child read during the course of the year. We had a total of nearly one thousand books read by the end of the year.
