Lesson #4
Using the Tool Panel in a WP Doc

You can bring a number of graphics into a word processing document through use of the tool panel. This lesson will show you how to bring in spreadsheets (grids that organize numbers), drawing elements and painting boxes.

1. Open up a WP document in Claris Works.

2. Open the tool panel. You do this one of two ways. One way is to click one time on the tool panel icon in the lower left part of the screen. It's the icon directly to the right of the two icons that look like jagged mountains. Or, go to the View menu and select Show Tools. The tool panel will now be at the upper left part of your document.

3. If you want to enter text (words) on your page, the big "A" on the tool panel must be highlighted. Click on the "A" and enter some text.

4. Now, let's try the spreadsheet tool. It's the one that looks like a first aid cross. Click on it. Notice that when you bring your cursor onto your document it looks like that cross. To enter a spreadsheet, click the cross onto your page and drag a grid open. Make it 3 columns wide and 6 rows high. It should look like this:

5. In order to use the spreadsheet, you must have the spreadsheet tool selected in your tool panel.

6. Enter a number in cell A1. Now press return to move down to cell A2 or click on it. Enter another number. Do this down through cell A5. Next, go to cell A6 and type this formula: =sum(A1..A5)
That formula means that the spreadsheet will add up every number you entered in cells A1 through A5 and will put the answer in cell A6.

7. Now enter any numbers you like in cells B1 through B5 and C1 through C5.

8. The next step is to select cell A6 (where you put the formula), hold down the mouse button and drag across to B6 and C6, selecting all of them. Now, go up to the pulldown menu called "Calculate" and choose "Fill Right". That means that your formula will now work for each column. The computer knows that B6 will be the sum of B1 through B5, and that C6 will sum up the values in C1 through C5.

9. Next, let's try some of the draw tools. Click on the rectangle, hold down your mouse button and drag right and down to create a rectangle. Using the arrow tool, select the rectangle. Notice the handlebars at each corner. If it is selected, you can manipulate it with the pen palette or the fill palette. Experiment.

10. Now click on the painting tool (it looks like a little paintbrush). Hold down the mouse button and drag right and down to place a painting box on your document. You can now experiment with the painting tools, but they only work when you are in paint mode and you can only paint inside the box you made. Experiment.

11. Cool, huh?
