The first step in helping Jefferson 4th grade students to understand the basics of designing a web site was to introduce them to a simple home page. Home pages are primarily made up of images, text, and buttons that connect you to another page or website. The students were shown examples of other school web sites and what information was provided on them.
After the students understood web site basics they were then asked to design two buttons / links for the Jefferson Web site.
After they created their individual buttons /links the students worked in groups and collaborated on designing a web page that not only displayed their artistic talents but also demonstrated their understanding of how a web page is mapped out. They learned about lay-out and design, fonts and point sizes. The students were then asked to write a short statement about their buttons and work.
The examples that you will see on the next six pages is the culmination of a series of lessons that took place over the course of six weeks.
The goal of this project was to help students to better understand how a web page is designed so that eventually they along with other Jefferson students will be able to publish and maintain Jefferson's web site.
