Our Pen Pals from The Gambia- Continued

We got our second set of letters and they are beginning to really take on the individual flavors of the children and their sharings. It is fascinating to listen to the questions and the differences in their environment/school and ours. One child asked if a John Muir student had to fetch water and haul wood from the bush for his mother, because those were his chores every day. The Muir students are surprised to discover that some Gambian students have TV in their homes, and others do not even have access to one in their compounds. And some children there love Two Pac! Nathaniel and I were "patronized" by the teacher, who is also the Head Gardener, for a fund raising dance for a wall for the school garden and other projects. Half of their garden is banana trees!! The other half is vegetables that they eat for lunches and dinners at the school, and sell to the neighborhood for funds. They have two shifts of students becauce they are so crowded. 8:30 - 1:45 and 1:45 to 6 pm!!! yikes. Imagine teaching that long, and to two groups of 37 - 40!! It's very interesting. We will continue to write next year, because I will have this class for 5th grade and the students in The Gambia have to get together on their own time to write back to us. We want to send tee-shirts to them all too. We have alrady sent pictures, maps, books, and posters. No Pokemon stickers yet!
