Students will create a physical model of the San Francisco Bay area which demonstrates an understanding of the formation and location of geography features.
Geographic Literacy:
Students will be able to read a physical map and use a map key, a map scale and a compass.
Time Required: Approximately one month
Materials Needed:
1. Houghton Mifflin Social Science Book: From Sea to Shining Sea, Unit 1
2. Digital Images from the Bancroft Library
3. Salt dough, 2-5 lbs bags of flour, 4-26 ounces of Morton salt
4. Maps of San Francisco
5. 30 pieces of cardboard (8 1/2" x 11")
6. Paint and brushes (blue, green, orange brown)
7. Globe
Procedures
1. Study Unit 1-Houghton Mifflin Social Science Book
2. Visit the Bancroft Library through the Internet & download images
3. Use Thumbnail view sketch of San Francisco...Have students identify land forms: Pacific Ocean , Golden Gate Strait, San Francisco Bay, San Pablo Bay, Suisun Bay, Marin Range, Oakland Hills, Mount Diablo, Santa Cruz Mountains, Santa Clara Mountains, Vacaville Range, Angel Island, Yerba Buena Island, Treasure Island, Alcatraz Island, Farallon Island
4. Distribute Hills of San Francisco Activity Sheet
5. Field Trips-Twin Peaks, Bancroft Library
6. Mapping Skills: legends, scales, directions (Houghton Mifflin Social Science Book pg 244-245, 35, 49, 52), and mapping skills worksheets
7. Build San Francisco Bay Model using flour, corn starch, salt, paint
8. Document activities: photos from field trips, photos of process and products; scan images and writing into a multimedia package
