Project Goal:

Learners will be able to describe the history and contributions of a particular culture using primary sources and literature accessed mainly from the California Heritage Digital Image Access Project.

The first project in time for Mexican Independence Day, September 16th, focused on the history of the San Francisco Bay Area searching the Web images of California before statehood.

Ongoing work consists of students being trained on the Internet in our Multimedia Lab. As part of the "Adopt a School Program", a volunteer from the Public Utilities Commission works each week with students in our Lab. The Technology Resource Teacher also instructs students on the use of the Internet. On the Internet, students visit the California Digital Media Project at the Bancroft Library, UC Berkeley. All students are trained on the use of HyperStudio in order to create student products incorporating their Internet visits and their local and family history.

As part of the Third Grade Social Studies Curriculum, students learn about the San Francisco Bay Area. Students learn about the city of San Francisco and about San Francisco neighborhoods. They learn about geographical features as they explore bridging the bay, the various earthquakes, the rich architectural heritage, all the unique heritage of the locale in which they reside.

Students are compiling a personal history as part of their homework assignments.
