The Visual & Performing Arts Department

Lowell is pleased to offer beginning, intermediate, and advanced courses in ART, DANCE, DRAMA, and MUSIC; the four arts areas recognized by the California State Department of Education.   All Lowell arts courses address the four standards of the California Framework for Arts Education:

•  Artistic Perception   (understanding and analyzing art)
•  Creative Expression   (performing and producing works of art)
•  Historical and Cultural Context
•  Aesthetic Valuing   (art criticism)

GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS IN THE ARTS:

The SFUSD requires two semesters of visual and performing arts classes for graduation.   Students may choose any two courses in the Visual & Performing Arts to fulfill this graduation requirement.   The two courses do not have to be taken during the same school year.

COLLEGE ENTRY REQUIREMENTS IN THE ARTS:

CSU and UC require applicants to complete two sequential semesters in any one arts area.   This means that the two courses must be in one single arts focus.   For example, Art 1 and Art 2, or Drama 1 and Drama 2.   This does not mean, however, that the two courses must be taken during the same school year.
