The first grade students are begining to understand the reading process. Through the use of Open Court and the district adopted series Scholastic, the students engage in phonemic awareness activities and phonics. Childrens' reading experiences are enriched by the use of the computers, which supports language development with activities that integrate reading, writing, listening and speaking. First graders are exposed to a wide range of literary genre. Their experiences are enhanced by participating in assemblies which involve multi-grade participation and multi-cultural themes. First grade activities are hands on and literacy-based. The goal of the primary grades is to learn to read, whilst the goal of the upper grades is to read in order to learn.
